Visit South Bank parklands for a pleasant day in the park alongside the Brisbane River. Restaurants overlooking the river, cafes and picnic facilities provide endless choices to relax. Since World Expo '88 the site has been redeveloped as a parkland precinct.
Lifestyle markets are held every weekend selling local craft and clothing wares, while regular live entertainment at the piazza and walking trails provide a great escape from the city heart.
To get to South Bank you can hop on a CityCat ferry which make regular stops up and down the river or catch a train. Jetties also dot the river bank for private boat access. Try a pleasant walk across the Goodwill Bridge to the Botanical Gardens.
You will find plenty of open green spaces and BBQs and even an artificial beach/lagoon. Walking paths are great for cyclists and joggers.
Brisbane locals flock to South Bank every year for the annual fireworks display to celebrate Brisbane River festival, an annual celebration of live entertainment and other displays focusing on the river. New Years' Eve features another spectacular show of fireworks and colour over the city.
Qld Cultural Centre including the Art Gallery and Performing Arts Complex are located at the northern end of South Bank. From October to March an open air cinema shows family movies on the grassy bank near the piazza.
IMAX theatre with its huge screen and changing programs is located on Grey Street with standard movie cinemas. South Bank Parklands also has many restaurants, bars, shopping boutiques and tourist information is available along Little Stanley Street.
